ADVENTURES ON THE GORGE
FAYETTEVILLE, WV
ADVENTURES ON THE GORGE:
Adventures on the Gorge doesn't have a conventional gym, because the entire property is built around movement — guided whitewater rafting on the Upper New, Lower New, and Gauley Rivers, rock climbing and rappelling, mountain biking, horseback riding, and a full aerial program including ziplines, a treetop adventure park, and a walk across the New River Gorge Bridge itself. The seasonal Canyon Falls pool and in-cabin hot tubs handle recovery, and six on-site dining venues, from Smokey's Gorge to Mill Creek Cafe, cover everything from casual to sit-down. Deluxe cabins come with full kitchens; other lodging types range from rustic to glamping, so kitchen access varies by what you book.
The resort sits directly on the rim of New River Gorge National Park, one of the best rock climbing destinations in the country, with whitewater on the New and Gauley Rivers that's famous worldwide. A short drive away, Historic Fayetteville — voted one of the "Coolest Small Towns in America" — offers award-winning restaurants, local breweries, and coffee shops, much of it connected by hiking trail so a car isn't strictly necessary. The New River Gorge Bridge itself, one of the longest steel arch bridges in the Western Hemisphere, is worth the trip alone; guided catwalk tours take visitors underneath it, and every October it hosts Bridge Day, the country's largest extreme sports gathering, when BASE jumpers leap from the span into the gorge below.

★DESTINATION GYM: NEW RIVER GORGE NATIONAL PARK
America's newest national park (designated 2020) and one of the best rock climbing destinations in the country, with over 1,400 established climbing routes on sandstone cliffs. The New and Gauley Rivers offer some of the best whitewater in the eastern U.S., from beginner-friendly floats to Class V rapids on the Upper Gauley. A growing trail network supports hiking and mountain biking across the gorge, and the whole park is the reason this property exists — there's no need to leave for a "destination gym" because the destination is the gym.
