How to Find a Fitness-Forward Hotel Before You Book
Let me save you from a situation I know you've been in.
You did everything right. Researched the hotel, read the reviews, compared prices, convinced yourself this one would be different. Then you get there, find the "fitness center" on the third floor, and walk into a room with two treadmills, a wobbling elliptical, and a rack of dumbbells that stops at 25 pounds. There's also a motivational poster on the wall. Just to really twist the knife.
Here's how to stop letting that happen.
The Gym Photos Tell You Everything — If You Can Find Them
Hotels that are proud of their fitness facilities lead with them. Hotels that are not — bury them at the end of the gallery between the parking garage and the conference room. You know which one you're dealing with the second you start scrolling.
When you do find the photos, here's what you're actually looking for:
Free weights and what they top out at. 25s don't count.
A squat rack or functional training space — not just cardio machines lined up like sad little soldiers
Floor space you can actually move in
Equipment brands. Life Fitness, Technogym, Peloton — green flags. Anything with a brand name you've never heard of — red flag.
Natural light. This one's not negotiable for me personally.
No photos of the gym? Call them. The answer will tell you everything.
Ask Specific Questions and Don't Accept Vague Answers
Hotels are trained to say yes. So stop asking yes or no questions.
Don't ask "do you have a good gym?" Ask:
What is the heaviest dumbbell in the fitness center?
Is there a squat rack or barbell?
What are the gym hours — and is it actually open at 5am?
Is there outdoor trail access or a running route?
Do you have a sauna, cold plunge, or steam room?
If they can't answer those questions specifically — they don't have it. Move on.
The Gym Is Just the Starting Point
The best fitness-forward properties aren't just hotels with a decent weight room. They're built around movement and recovery as a full experience.
What you're actually looking for:
Outdoor access — trails, beach runs, rooftop space, something that gets you outside
Recovery — sauna, cold plunge, infrared, a spa that isn't just for massages
Nutrition — a kitchen or restaurant that doesn't make you choose between your macros and enjoying your trip
Programming — on-site classes, trainers, movement-based activities that aren't just yoga at 8am
Pool — lap pool or resort pool. Know the difference before you book.
A hotel that checks all of these isn't just a place to sleep. It's a place that actually supports why you travel the way you do.
This Is Exactly Why VENU Exists
You shouldn't have to call front desks, dig through photo galleries, or cross your fingers every time you book a hotel. Every property in the VENU directory is evaluated for its fitness and wellness offerings — gyms, recovery amenities, outdoor access, all of it.
Search by location. Filter by what actually matters to you. Book with confidence.
Because you've worked too hard to let a bad hotel undo it.
